October Oregon Getaway, part 5...

Part 5...

Our next stop was at the Oregon Gardens (http://www.oregongarden.org/). It was a little late in the season for the tour but it was good to see what is going on there. It would be worth the time to come back earlier in the summer next year. The town of Silverton was a very pleasant surprise. A charming little town northeast of Salem. We'll have to visit there for a weekend sometime.

Our next stop was to be at Silver Lake Falls but we found ourselves at the entrance at about 3:00 pm Tuesday afternoon and realized that we had to be at Steamboat Inn, east of Roseburg, for dinner at 7:30. And, much of the trip would be on country roads. So..."Silver Falls next time." A quick calculation indicated that we had about 3 1/2 hours of driving to make it in time for check in and dinner. We made it to the front door at a little after 7:00.

Steamboat is a "wayside inn" about 40 miles up the Umpqua River east of Roseburg. It's a beautiful ride and the destination was worth the trip. The Inn is very charming with the rooms/cottages located right above the Umpqua River on a 12 mile section of fly-fishing only. Hard-core fly fisher"people" come in from all over the country to fish here. The evening meal is served family style. It was expensive...more so than Nick's in Mcminnville...but not as good as Nick's. I would have paid about 1/3 as much and would have been quite satisfied. For the price we paid is was good but not great. Our stay was wonderful. Old, quaint, well maintained cabins with all the modern conveniences made for a nice relaxing getaway. No TV, radio, etc. Just the sound of the river.

After breakfast on Wednesday morning we drove up to Toketee Falls, Diamond Lake and back home. Part 6 for the final journal...
